Do you know the story about this, did Joe give it to Chris?

Well, I've heard a few different stories about how Chris got the guitar.
On the Billy Bragg bootleg of his Joe Strummer tribute gig Billy Bragg says it broke his heart when Strummer gave Chris his guitar as he wanted it. I've also heard that Chris bought the guitar off Joe Strummer. When I asked Martin Hewes about how Chris ended up with Joe Strummer's guitar he said that Chris bought the guitar off the music journalist Charles Shaar Murray.

Chris didn't have Joe's 'IGNORE ALIEN ORDER' guitar as I played both. Chris' Tele was Blond and Joe's was black. I know this because I played a soundcheck with the Redskins at the Leadmill in '86 and with Joe at Brodsworth when my band 'The Way' supported him on the 'Rock Against The Rich' tour in '88 (I actually spent the whole weekend with Joe and Alex Cox - mint). Whilst at Brodsworth, before we were due to go out on stage, Joe called me into the dressing room and booted out the journalist from 'The Independent'. He then passed me his black tele and I started to play 'London Calling' (which I would NEVER do now) and, Joe being Joe, he started to sing along. I've been playing live since I was fifteen (1984) and, next to the birth of my two girls, is my favourite memory.
When Joe died I cried till my fucking eyes were dry. A true inspiration.
p.s. If you speak to Martin again soon please ask him if he's still in touch with Steven Wells and whether he remembers the day 'The Way' turned up at the flat for an interview lol.

Martin is still in touch with Steven Wells and he told me that Swells is now living in America. I think he still writes for the www.playlouder.com website. As for Chris Deans telecaster, it was once own by Strummer. I remember reading a Clash book which said that CBS bought Joe a new guitar when The Clash were recording their debut album but he never used it. I think this is the guitar that Chris ended up with.

The Joe Strummer tribute gig is available to download at the following site - Billy Bragg - Joe Strummer TributeBilly Bragg goes on about Strummer giving his guitar to X Moore on the track Joe & Woody. The bootleg is FLAC files rather than mp3. If you don't know how to play FLAC files then see the info below - How can I listen to FLAC files?Macintosh: Download and install MacAmp Lite, a multi-format audio player, and then install the FLAC Plugin for MacAmp. Windows: Download and install WinAmp, a multi-format audio player, and then install the FLAC Plugin for WinAmp.

Chris told me the story behind the telecaster at, I think, the Cricklewood gig on Bazza's list. I have been wracking my brain, but I really can't remember what his version of the story was, though I did have a quick strum on it myself.

I've got to agree with telboyd. I saw a picture, last night, of my brother with Strummer's Telecaster slung round his neck. It was at a big Class War gig in Manc.(possibly Rock against the Rich). Definately late eighties.

Some new info on this at the Strummer News Message Board from Charles Shaar Murray! 10/11/06 at 10:59 AM -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Charles Shaar Murray here ... just to clear up the 'Joe gave Chris a Tele' issue: what happened was that, around 1979-80, Joe sold me a black maple-neck 1977 Tele which CBS had given him as a gift during the first album sessions. He'd had it decorated with stickers and stencils (bullets, sergeant's stripes, the word BOSS, Jackson Pollock style red paint flicks on the scratchplate) and used it as a stage spare - you can see it in some of the Rude Boy concert footage - but decided that he preferred rosewood-board Teles like his original, and like the white Esquire he subsequently bought, Anyway, he sold it to me dead cheap on condition that I used it as a working guitar and wouldn't sell it on as a Clash heirloom. Both to keep my word to Joe and because the OTT Clash graphics didn't suit my style, I stripped the finish (art and all - yeah, I know, sacrilege and vandalism) and refinished it in natural wood along the lines of Bruce Springsteen's 1952 model. I also swapped the neck pickup for a Stratocaster PU, and replaced the 70s Fender logo with a 50s type. Kept the red-splattered scratchplate, though. That's the guitar I later sold Chris Dean, which he used for the rest of The Redskins' career. As far as I know, he still has it. www.websitetoolbox.com/tool/post/strummernews/vpost?id=1204180

Chris also had a Telecaster Custom as a second guitar, I can't remember what colour though. Amp, a Vox AC30. What a sound!
