Greetings all. I'm looking to find what studio material has never made it onto CD. I know there's the Lev Bronstein/Peasant Army single, the CNT version of Lean On Me, and Unionize from the same single. There's also You Want It, They've Got It. Seeing as I only collect 7" singles I don't have the 12" stuff. Am I missing anything from anywhere? Cheers, Derek.

The 7 inch single of 'Lean On Me' & 'Unionzie' are both available on CD (see the discography in the compilations section). Here are the songs that have been released on vinyl but not on CD. But there are still some other unreleased Redskins studio recordings and radio session that have yet to make it onto CD or vinyl. Young & Proud (Anthem Of Mistake) You Want It? They've Got It! It Can Be Done (single version) It Can Be Done (David Jansen Session) Take Your Gods & Bury Them Take No Heroes (fast version) A Plateful Of Hateful Lean On Me (Northern Mix) Unionize (Break Mix) Reds Strike The Blues (Peel Session) The Peasant Army (Peel Session) You Want It They Got It (Red Souls & Fury mix) Kick Over The Statues (The Ramsey McKinnock Mix)

Cheers Bazza. I didn't think to look in the discography section, dumbass me. Although I don't generally collect 12" vinyl (with the exception of The Jam) I must try to locate the Peel sessions 12". Is the version of Peasant Army any different to the single version? I'd love to hear any demos etc from around the time of the first single, but I guess if there were any around they'd've seen the light of day by now. What other material remains unreleased? Is there a studio version of Can't Stand The Boss at all? Derek.

The Peel session recording of 'Peasant Army' is just about the same as the single.
The Redskins never recorded a studio version of 'I Can't Stand The Boss'.
The unreleased Redskins stuff that I know of is -
'Keep On Keepin' On' (demo) - recorded for Go-Discs just before the band signed to Decca. The lyrics are a little different than the single.
'Don't Talk To Me About Whether' - Possibly a demo as it features no brass section.
'The Most Obvious Moderate Sensible Thing' - a poem by German socialist poet Bertolt Brecht which Chris Dean put music to. Recorded for a Peel Session in 1986 but never broadcast. Some other songs might have been recorded at this session but I've never heard them.
'So It Goes' - sounds like this song might be Chris Dean on his own as the track features a drum machine. Possibly a P-Mod (Chris's band after the Redskins) song rather than the Redskins.
'Hold On', '99 And A Half Won't Do' & 'Take No Heroes'. Recorded for a John Peel session in 1983. 'Young & Proud' from this session was released as the b-side to 'Kick Over The Statues'.
Gary Crowley session. Not sure what songs the band recorded for this Capitol Radio session.
There is also a tape of No Swastikas that features 4 studio recordings. This is the bands second line up and features Chris Dean, Martin Hewes & Nick King. Insurgence Records from Canada have a copy of this tape. But I'm not sure if the songs will ever be released.

What a shame there was never a studio version of 'Can't Stand The Boss', I rate this track very highly, it's got a great rhythm running right through it. 'The Most Obvious...' sounds interesting. Be great to hear the No Swastikas stuff too. I wonder if they are comparable to the Redskins sound circa 'Lev Bronstein'. Have you heard the tape Bazza?

No, I've yet to hear any stuff by No Swastikas, either by the first line up or the second line up who became the Redskins. Martin did say I could have his tape of No Swastikas. But when we did meet up it seems that Insurgence Records had beat me to the tape. I'll have to learn to keep my mouth shut in future when I learn of rare Redskins stuff.

One thing about The Redskins that I've always found peculiar is that they went straight from the melodic punk fury of Lev Bronstein/Peasant Army to the Stax-fuelled Lean On Me with no real middle ground or transitional phase. There must be some material somewhere that at least indicates the changes that were coming - demos or something that hint of the road ahead. I dare say there probably were such tracks, but whether they still exist in any form is probably the real question.

The Redskins started using brass early on and I think the only stuff recorded without a brass section was the first single. 'Lev Bronstein' came out in the summer of 1982 and the Redskins first used a brass section on 9th October 1982 for a John Peel Radio 1 session. The bands line up for this session was - Chris Dean (Guitar, Vocals) Nick King (Drums) Millicent Martin (Hewes) (Bass) Steve Nichol (Trumpet) Lloyd Dwyer (Saxophone) & Guests: Dagenham Pete Pixie (Backing Vocals) John Mekon (Backing Vocals) Colin Car (Backing Vocals) There's more info here on the session www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/johnpeel/sessions/1980s/1982/Oct09theredskins/

There's a few early Redskins songs mentioned in an article for Sounds music magazine from 14th August 1982. These songs are -
'Longbridge', 'Skins Hate Nazis', 'Call' and 'Radio DJs'.
I've never heard any of these songs myself but the Sounds magazine article does print these lyrics from an early Redskins song -
"Assemble In Hate Hot up and demonstrate You've got the choice This is the people's voice"
There's also the unreleased song 'Names Were Named' which was played on the Redskins Italian tour of 1986. While this song was never recorded in a studio it was broadcast on Italian tv at the time. Live bootlegs also exist of this song. The Redskins also played another new song on the Italian tour but I don't know the title of it and neither does Martin Hewes. Martin says that during this tour they had a lot of time during sound checks and used to mess around jamming and this song might of been knocked up during one of these jams.

Ah, and valued they are to the Red ear, cheers for the earlier posting Baz. These sort of things prove what an efeing great band Redskinns were. On the subject of a post of mine in the MUSIC forum, another (admitedly obscure) Jam connection is that one of 100 Men (featuring Bruce Foxton on bass)'s unreleased tracks was called 'Redskins'...

I have long since lost a white label 12" version of Lean on Me but I was sure I can't stand the boss was on the other side. Could be my age though.

I've asked Martin before about the song 'I Can't Stand The Boss' and he told me that the Redskins never recorded a studio version of that song. You can hear part of the song on the 'Beating The Blues' vide. The full song on the ICA Redskins live bootleg.

What a shame there was never a studio version of 'Can't Stand The Boss', I rate this track very highly, it's got a great rhythm running right through it. 'I Can't Stand The Boss' has just been released on a double CD called 'Music For A Revolution'. Well, it's just a very small section of the song (25 seconds) and is the live version taken from the 'Beating The Blues' video and only features the music without any vocals on. The 'Music For A Revolution' CD was compiled and produced by Alan Dunn as a limited edition (1,000) and given away free of charge as part of the exhibition 'Recent Appointments' at Leeds Met Gallery, with support from the Arts Council of England. Project developed and produced by 67projects, Wirral/Liverpool/Leeds. More info on this release at - www.alandunn67.co.uk/revolution.html

I guess this might as good as it gets in terms of a "proper" release of the song. I'll say it again though, it's a shame there isn't a studio version of the song. It could have been a Redskins classic.
