A march is being planned for Saturday 17th January in Middlesbrough to call for an end to the Israeli action in Gaza.
Israel launched the offensive on December 27th after more than a week of Palestinian rocket fire that followed a six-month truce.
Since then hundreds of people living in Gaza have died and thousands have been injured.
The organisers of the demonstration are Teesside Against the War, Stop the War Coalition, the Palestine Solidarity Campaign and other organisations.
Peter Smith, chairman of Teesside Against the War, said the central messages of the march would be “Israel out of Gaza” and “Free Palestine”.
He said: “One of the most populated places on earth is suffering appalling casualties.”
One of Middlesbrough’s biggest ever public protests is expected to be staged on Saturday in support of Palestinians in Gaza.
Teesside Against the War, which is leading the organisation of the protest march, predict over 1,000 people from across Teesside and South Durham will attend.
Peter Smith, the co-ordinator of the Rally, says that the numbers could surpass all previous political and humanitarian protests in the town.
The rally will assemble at the Albert Park entrance on Linthorpe Road at 11am and then move down Linthorpe Road into the town centre, ending at the steps of the Town Hall in Central Gardens for short speeches from a rostrum relayed across the public space near mima.
Speakers include: Yvonne Ridley, a journalist who works for Press TV and has recently visited Gaza; Ibrahim Hewitt from INTERPAL, a charity that helps the people of Palestine; North-east MEP Stephen Hughes, a long time supporter of Palestine; Frank Cook MP who has spoken out against the brutal assault on Gaza; and Peter Smith, chairman of Teesside Against the War.
Iranian television, whose facilities were bombed in Gaza, may be among the media covering the march.
The march will mean the closure for a short time of northbound sections of road along the route of the march as it makes its way up Linthorpe Road to Grange Road and then into Albert Road towards the Town Hall.
