I just got a hold of an mp3 that purports to be Billy Bragg with the Redskins singing "Back in the USSR"--of course, the track was part of the Redskins' repertoire, but this mp3 is pretty Bragg-centric. Could it have been with the Redstars or Riff Raff? Anyways, I've put the mp3 up here: www.geocities.com/scottkoldenburg/music2Let me know if you know anything about the track (really the Redskins....when?) Also put up the Woody Guthrie version of "All you fascists" there. Will leave up for a few weeks. --Scott More music if you delete the "2" from the url above.

I have the same mp3 saved on my PC. I can't remember which website I got it off now. The drumming sounds a little bit like Nick King's but I can't be sure. I have a Redskins bootleg from Durham Uni in 1984 where Chris Dean says "If Billy Bragg would like to emerge from the audience now we'll do Back In the USSR" he then goes on to say that they did that cover with Billy Bragg in Manchester a few nights before (which I think is where that mp3 is supposed to have been recorded). In the end the Redskins cover 'People Get Ready' without Billy Bragg.

The Redskins and Billy Bragg did do "back in the USSR' together when they did a joint headliner at the Camden Electric Ballroom in 1984,supported by Dr. and the Medics. My memory isn't deceiving me as I got a bootleg tape a couple of months later with it on the tape. It was probably the last major London gig with no horn section, though the crowd sings the horn parts on "Unionize". Great gig.
