Just a bit of info... Mick Whitnall who played guitar for mid 80's left wing (Redskins influenced) skinhead band Skin Deep is now the guitarist for Pete Dohertys Babyshambles. Check the NME this week. He also did a stint with Finley Quay.

I remember Skin Deep. I've got their album 'More Than Skin Deep' on CD along with 'A Day On The Town' by The Burial.
Did Mick Whitnall also play in the ska band 100 Men? As I know that a few of their members came from Skin Deep. I supported 100 Men at a ska festival up in Edinburgh back in the mid 90s when I was with The G Men.

That link should be - www.youtube.com/watch?v=6v1wJwx-BFAThanks for the video! 100 Men had a great 60s ska/rocksteady sound. Did they release many records? As all I have by them is a flexi disc that has their version of 'Time Is Tight' on. I remember the band used to get all their clothes cheap from The Merc as the shop sponsored the band.

I've had a look google and it seems that when Skin Deep split up Mick Whitnall joined The Ferrymen. I have a 5 track EP by The Ferrymen called 'A Slice Of Humble Pie'. It sounds a lot like The Housemartins. There's some more info on The Ferrymen here - theferrymen.tripod.com/index.html

Below is a flyer from the ska festival I did with 100 Men (Click on the image to enlarge). 100 Men headlined the festival and the G Men were on just before them. I seem to remember that the G Men went down better with the crowd that night. Before I joined the G Men they played a gig in Newcastle with 100 Men (see flyer below). I have a copy on tape of the G Men's set that night and at the end of the set 100 Men join the G Men on stage to run through 'Long Shot Kick De Bucket', 'Liquidator' and 'Skinhead Moonstomp'.

The name The Banditos rings a bell. Which label put the comp out? As I might have it.

George Marshall's comp 'Max The Dog Says Do The Ska'? Yep, I've got the comp somewhere on both vinyl & CD. The vinyl issue mentions the North East band The Restrictors in the sleeve notes. The Restrictors were a great band but only ever released 2 tracks on a local compilation back in the mid 80s. When The Restrictors split up Dins, Croizer & Laze from the band formed The G Men.

Talking of George Marshall, he once turned up to a G Men gig in Redcar with a film crew. It was for his documentary 'World Of Skinhead'. In the end none of our set was shown, just as well as by this time we didn't have a brass section and it was our first gig with a new drummer. It also turned out to be my last gig with the band. Although the G Men didn't feature in the documentary there's a very brief clip of me drinking at the bar in the club.

Mick Whitnall did play a few gigs with The Ferrymen but was not a member of the band. The Ferrymen where formed by the lead singer of Skin Deep. There were 2 exmembers of Skin Deep in 100 Men, Mick and Stig the drummer. Check this weeks NME there are a few pics of Mick Whitnall as a Babyshamble.
