Many many years ago I heard a 60s (or maybe 70s) soul song that was clearly the inspiration/original of the Jam's "Transglobal express"--similar horns, same "ba ba ba" chorus. As I recall it was pretty much the same song but without Weller's socialist rant in the background. Anyone know who did that song originally?
Could it have been on one of the Kent Northern Soul comp's?
Thanks, Scott

I've heard that it was took off another track as well but I can't remember which song at the moment.
The Redskins also used to borrow from Northern Soul songs. Have a listen to "You Can't Mean It" by Chapter Five as the brass is the same as Turnin' Loose. Although the Redskins speed it up slightly.

Thanks for tracking that down, Bazza. So many people have doubted me on the fact that the song was a kind of cover. You can hear it here (scroll down til you see the song title): www.onceuponatimeinwigan.com/cd_content.html

I have that track on some Northern Soul comp but it's ages since I've played it. I'm surprised Weller got away with it as it's very similar. Here's a direct link to the song - So Is The Sun - World Column
